Community Involvement

If you have taken the time to review our team’s bios, you already know that giving back to the community is important to us. Our team is committed to giving back to the community by participating in events that provide dental care to those with limited access. We are involved with the following organizations:

Bringing Smiles to the Phillipines

Bringing Smiles to the Philippines

In response to requests made by our patients, Dr. Sharun, Joyce Acheson and Brenda Nobles lead a team of 23 members to the small Philippine areas of Diffun, Cordon and Capul as part of a Kindness in Action initiative in 2014.

The team spent 4 days in each of the Northern towns of Diffun and Cordon, providing free day clinics and training to Filipino dental students. The team then headed south to the island of Capul for two days, setting up medical and dental facilities, which provided easy access to basic services that community members usually have to travel off-island to receive.

This was Dr. Sharun and Brenda’s 7th mission with Kindness in Action and Joyce’s 10th.

Homeless Connect

Homeless Connect

Homeless Connect is a twice a year, one-day community event held at Edmonton’s Shaw Conference Centre that brings social agencies, businesses and volunteers together to provide a range of services that can help Edmonton’s homeless people out of homelessness. Dental care is one of the most in-demand services at the event, with hundreds of people lining up for check-ups, cleanings and other much needed treatments.

Kindness In Action (KIA)

Kindness in Action (Service Society of Alberta) is a volunteer group of dental professionals and their friends who donate their time, money and hearts to provide dental care, prevention, and pain relief to the poor and needy in poverty-stricken communities outside of North America. Multiple KIA dental missions occur each year all around the world, each one running about 7 days. During this time, approximately 500 people receive much needed dental treatment, including examinations, extractions, fillings, cleanings and dentures. The main goal is to relieve as many people of pain as possible. That goal is intertwined with a message of prevention that involves dispensing toothbrushes along with individual and school dental hygiene instruction.

Student Health Initiative for the Needs of Edmonton (SHINE)

The SHINE Youth Clinic is a student-run health clinic that operates out of Edmonton’s Boyle McCauley Health Centre on Saturday afternoons. The inner-city clinic is managed and staffed by University of Alberta Healthcare students and provides numerous free services to Edmonton’s underserved youth. Dentistry is one of the eight health care disciplines represented at the clinic and is often the most in-demand. Supervised by licensed healthcare professionals, students play a crucial role in providing care to patients in need while gaining practical experience. The SHINE Youth Clinic is a wonderful organization that benefits inner-city youth and students alike.
